A “new year, new you” philosophy seems to take over popular culture at the beginning of each year, and the start of 2017 has been no different. Each day we face new challenges all of which come with their own circumstances and requirements. Because of life’s fast pace, we need to ensure that our mind stays sharp for the journey.

With a new administration settling into our nation’s capital, the coming year is more uncertain than most.  The question that is probably at the fore-front of many minds is “what does this year have in store for me, especially if there are changes in new government policies, and how will these policies affect my day-to-day life?”

There are certain to be some changes with federal policies and priorities that will affect individuals’ lives and the business industry. Whenever change occurs—whether it’s in a group you belong to, your individual life, at work or at home—understanding the big picture will fuel your enthusiasm toward the change. Having a sense of purpose in our lives to accommodate and adapt to change is paramount.

We must ensure our mind is sharp for this journey. You will need to focus on what you hope to obtain. And then, you need to set obtainable goals.  Author and motivational speaker Dennis Waitley said, “Failures do what is tension relieving, while winners do what is goal achieving.”

Unrealistic goals only bring about frustration and clouds your vision. To ensure your goals are realistic and achievable, it’s helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the goal compelling?
  • Does the goal have a deep meaning to me?
  • Is it the kind of goal that excites me?
  • Does it let me grow?
  • Is the goal achievable?
  • Is the goal meaningful to me?

Setting goals is the first step in keeping your mind sharp for 2017 as well as ensuring you know what expectations you have for yourself regardless of what political policies may change or stay the same.
