Hanging on the wall in the community room in Walker Courts South is a wooden, well-kept display with the words “House Rules” painted at the top. Below are 13 house rules that relate to everyday life. The first rule is “stay strong.” Reading over the list several times, my attention was drawn back to this rule, which was a reminder to me that in difficult times strength is our hallmark for facing life’s problems.
In addition, the rule was a reminder that difficult times can lie ahead and strength of mind is needed in meeting those challenges. Relationships and health problems often place hardship and strain on one’s personal life and can lead to undue stress. So, strength of mind is paramount in life to combat stresses generated by hardships.
We need to stay strong to endure the stresses we face in everyday living. Sometimes we struggle with stress at work to finish a project or in our personal life, it can be compounded with financial problems. Like any problem, stress requires a strategic approach to manage. Stress is real, but we always have a choice. We can let it consume us or we can learn to control it by staying strong.
Being grateful for your blessings cancels out negative thoughts which amounts to less stress. When you start feeling stressed, spend a few minutes enjoying your natural surroundings and reflecting on memories of the good times you have had to remind yourself of what really matters.
As you stand strong facing difficulties in life, try the following tips to remain at peace: find a balance between work and family life. Second, have a sense of purpose in life. Many people find meaning through connections with family or friends, jobs, their spirituality, or volunteer work. Third, get enough sleep. On average, many individuals are sleep deprived which can have very negative effects on your strength of mind.
