Louie is a 1½ year old hedgehog.

His favorite hobbies include: huffing, burrowing/hiding, running in his wheel, and eating worms.

As a hedgehog is not a common pet for many folks, Trey let us in on the most frequently asked questions he receives about Louie, and owning a hedgehog in general.

What do they eat?

  • He loves meal worms as a treat but we feed him a high protein cat food for his main diet.

Why a hedgehog for a pet?

  • Our first apartment wouldn’t allow cats or dogs, and my wife really wanted a pet. Hamsters are boring, as are fish, and Guinea Pigs are loud, and Ferrets stink. So we went with a hedgehog.

What about their quills?

  • Hedgehogs’ quills are pointy. No they cannot shoot them like porcupines. My hands are pretty used to it by now, so he can’t hurt me.

Do you keep it in a cage; do you let it run around the house?

  • Louie has a giant cage. They are nocturnal so we get him out for a little while before we go to bed and let him run around and play on a big blanket on the floor. You have to get hedgehogs out and hold them and rustle them up to get them used to your touch so they’re not as scared.

What is a hedgehog’s life expectancy?

  • Unfortunately hedgehogs only have an average of 5 years in life expectancy.

Speaking of beloved four-footed friends, The Scruff reminds everyone: please spay or neuter your pets.

Looking forward,
