Helen Keller said “the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” No truer statement could have been expressed about a person’s feelings towards the material things of this world. However, the most compelling expression that we can share with others is the expression of love for our children.
Love is the power and driving force which unites that which by its very nature, belongs together. It has its center and definition in the creation of all humanity. Love defines and gives direction to relationships beyond what is available by sight. Love then defines and gives direction to a relationship within our children.
When love is expressed in a song, it too must point beyond the literal meaning of the words to a deeper meaning which is hidden and mystical, because the lyrics of the song are not identical to that of which they speak. Love must be action-oriented; it makes itself known in and through what it does.
Which leads me to this point…teaching our children to make good decisions should be paramount because good decision making can be the key to a happy life. But good decision making is not a skill they are naturally blessed with. Courage, education, or growing older doesn’t automatically produce better decision makers. It is wise to spend time with good decision makers, but it doesn’t necessarily rub off on us.
As another school year will soon be starting, our children will be faced with making more decisions about what they do with their friends and on social media. Let’s teach them to follow these life principles:
- Consequences are a result of choices made.
- Let your children know it’s not their circumstances, but their decisions that govern their lives.
- Teach them that they always have options.
- Children can often feel powerless and hopeless if faced with negative or uncertain situations.
- Teach them to be thinkers.
- Thinking through things can prevent making rash decisions or doing something they could later regret.
As adults we are also faced with many options in life. I encourage you to always choose good over evil, and love over hate. When good is paired with love, it will have a much better chance of conquering the mountains you face daily.
Never give up, never give up, never give up!
