All of us have or have had habits that enslaved us. Think about it for a moment. Do you have a habit that you cannot give up or quit? The Apostle Paul said, “just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate.” If we went around doing whatever we thought we could get by with, you would be a slave to your desires.
If you are serious about spiritual growth, look for opportunities to say no to yourself in small areas. Then, one day, you will be able to say it when it really counts. There is an interesting story in the Bible that speaks to the notion of saying no to something when it is necessary. Daniel said no to eating the King’s food and later was able to say no to bowing to the King’s idols.
Examine your life. What enslaves you and what can’t you resist? Are there things in your life that cause you to be undisciplined? Is there any one thing you keep excusing, rationalizing, and delay dealing with? Ask yourself: Is it beneficial to my life? Does it have the potential to control me? Anything that controls you, enslaves you. You have the right to eat three pieces of chocolate cake before bedtime, but is it beneficial? It could lead to clogged arteries and unwanted extra pounds.
Whatever enslaves you can be your downfall. You have the right to make your own choices, but are those choices good for your wellbeing? Are you enslaved by certain TV shows or news broadcasts? You have the right to look at whatever you want on TV or the internet, but exposure to harmful influences will inevitably weaken your character, rob you of self-respect, and enslave you.
Remember this, your character is the sum total of the choices you make each day. When it comes to replacing bad habits with good ones, you are the only person who can make it happen.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians a reminder that “all things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.” Don’t allow your desires to enslave you to self-centered thinking. In all things, God is the answer to your needs. Seek him for discernment and your answer will be revealed. So, be not enslaved and be blessed. Never Give Up! Never Give Up! Never Give Up!
