Southview Remembers Fallen Officer

Smyth County Deputy Sheriff Hunter Reedy was one of the key individuals who started the Neighborhood Watch program at Southview Apartments in 2023.

“His tragic death last August still weighs on many of our hearts here at Southview,” says Sharon Caudill, Community Manager, Southview Apartments. Deputy Reedy was shot and killed while assisting officers from the Marion Police Department with a traffic stop Aug. 9, 2024.

Deputy Reedy was posthumously awarded the VFW 2024 Officer of the Year in Marion, VA, this month. In the Smyth County Sheriff’s Facebook post, officials said Deputy Reedy “became the real-life teddy bear and hero to children living in a local apartment complex (Southview.) He manned bounce houses, played touch football, and poured his heart into creating a safe, joyful space for these children.”

 

Last fall, Southview Apartments hosted a celebration of life event to honor Deputy Reedy’s legacy. Fellow officers and Southview residents attended. Reflecting Deputy Reedy’s dedication and involvement with the Southview community, the event featured games he would have enjoyed, food and fellowship. As the community heals and remembers Deputy Reedy, Smyth County officers continue to maintain the Neighborhood Watch program he helped establish.
