The Bible presents mothers as highly honored and vital figures in humanity. The Bible teaches that children should respect and obey both their mother and father, and it designates children as a blessing from God. Mothers are portrayed as nurturers and teachers—sources of wisdom who are entrusted with training their children and offering a love that reflects God’s own comfort.
The Psalmist in the Bible portrays mothers as part of God’s intentional creation process, highlighting the womb as the place where God knits life together. Because of this, all humanity should celebrate the joy of motherhood, recognizing the comfort, strength, and security mothers provide.
However, the journey of motherhood can also be filled with worry, even for those who trust in God. A mother naturally worries about the welfare of her child. Will the child grow up to be kind to others? Will they have good friends? Are they making safe choices in life?
Though a mother knows that she should not worry, it seems built into her DNA to worry about the wellbeing of her child. A mother’s world can feel big and scary because she longs to know she is doing enough to raise and protect her child.
In scripture, the Lord honored mothers by upholding the commandment to respect mothers and by rebuking those who neglected their parents. He demonstrated love for his mother, Mary, even while suffering on the cross. The Lord also used maternal imagery to describe his compassion, comparing his desire to protect his people to “a hen gathering her chicks.”
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. Honor your father and mother…..that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Paul reinforces the Old Testament command by framing it as a vital duty, reminding believers that this is the first commandment accompanied by a promise of blessing and long life.
On Sunday, the day set aside to honor mothers, all of humanity–especially children—should show appreciation for their mothers. Doing so reflects a respectful, caring attitude that carries both divine promise and moral obligation. Mothers are precious, so let us show them the love and honor they deserve.
