There is a great need to extend love to all of humanity in the world. There is so much divisiveness in our society that we need to practice extending love to those who are outside of our community. The Bible teaches that extending love is the highest calling and core commandment for believers.
This love is selfless, unconditional, and sacrificial, demanding action rather than just words. When Judge Esther Salas, US District Judge of New Jersey, expressed the words “extended love” she was trying to appeal to every American to show divine love. Judge Salas was seeking an expression of love that is often called agape—a love meant for everyone including neighbors, strangers, and enemies.
The gold standard of love is the instruction the Lord gave to his followers when he said, “love each other just as I have loved you.” He was asking his followers to put others’ needs before their own and serve with humility. The Bible challenges all humanity to do good to those who hear you. Doing good reflects the example set by the Lord, who demonstrated ultimate love by forgiving humanity even when they were acting against Him.
The Apostle Paul famously defines extending love in the book of Corinthians by noting that love is patient, kind, and does not keep a record of wrong doings. It requires tangible actions like showing hospitality, bearing one another’s burdens, and forgiving freely.
Ultimately, the Bible teaches that our capacity to extend this difficult, profound love comes not from our own strength, but rather from experiencing God’s love first and allowing the words of God to work through us. A notable example is the Bible’s story about the Good Samaritan. As he traveled along Jericho Road, he took pity on a man lying dying from his wounds. The Samaritan bandaged his wounds, poured oil and wine on his injuries, and brought him to an inn to care for him.
Just like in the time of the Lord’s travels, extending love is paramount in every walk of life. Today, men and women live in an economic uncertainty, grappling with the mounting costs of living, housing affordability, and job security in a fluctuating economy.
