Pessimism is defined as a tendency to expect the worst in everything.  People who have a negative attitude about everything are said to be pessimistic. They tend to have little faith that anything will ever turn out right. Their pessimism can lead to unrealistic views of life and cause depression.

Author and entrepreneur Amy Rees Anderson says she made a decision to avoid negative people early in her career because “nothing spreads faster than negativity. It’s like a cancer that spreads to everything it comes in contact with. It is designed to tear someone down, to make them question everything good in their life, and I found that if I allowed myself to be surrounded with negative people in my life that they would eventually start to suck the good out of my life and that was something I just wouldn’t stand for.”

Difficulties and disappointments in life can cause you to develop an attitude of hopelessness and a negative attitude about the future. They may cause you to think that nothing you do will make a difference in your life. If allowed, they can cause a negative mindset that will destroy relationships, lead to hostility in the workplace, and create divisions between children, parents, husbands, and wives.

Here are some pointers to assist you with having the right mindset about life.

  • Limit your exposure to negative input. Since you become like the company you keep, look for people who fortify your faith and who do not feed your fears.
  • Volunteer to serve others who are less fortunate. Serving creates positive feelings and gives you a sense of value; it’s also the right thing to do. I love working with Dean Parker who manages the Good Times events for the Legacy Housing Foundation. The Knoxville nonprofit assists those who are less fortunate by supplying essential household products.
  • Finally, look for the good in every situation and always express faith that it’s there. As the expression goes, there is some good in everyone, you just have to find it.
