The Apostle Luke writes a story about angels appearing to shepherds in a field, keeping watch over their flock by night. The angels announced to them, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior.” It is because of this great news that we celebrate each year on Christmas Day the birth of a Savior.
December 25 has been celebrated for generations and it is a holiday that all of us look forward to year round. We celebrate this day as did the shepherds in Luke’s time and enjoy traditional meals and Christmas festivities with family and friends. Of course, Christmas is a time when people exchange gifts and children receive presents.
However, I like to focus on the true meaning of Christmas. So, what does Christmas really mean? It is not only a celebration of the birth of a Savior but it is also a time for spiritual reflection. It’s a time that we can reflect on the foundations of our faith. It’s a time for celebrating God’s love for all humanity and a time for giving thanks for the love, hope and joy in our lives through many ways, such as gift-giving.
I am reminded that Christmas has become more commercialized. We hear people expressing to each other, “Have a Merry Christmas.” The term “Merry” is used instead of “Happy” which was used originally. “Merry,” as in “A Christmas Carol” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is used to convey a very joyful celebration. “Merry Christmas” reflects the message of love, joy and well wishes, which can be communicated irrespective of belief.
The great musical group, the Temptations, sang a song titled “Give Love on Christmas Day.” Some of the lyrics from the song stand out more than others. For example, “We need love every day as much as you give love on Christmas. And love is what the world needs. So, why don’t you give love on Christmas Day.” The Temptations’ lyrics remind us that sharing love should not be seasonal and we should show joy and love to each other every day.
Expressing joy, happiness and laughter should be part of our character traits. We should not have to be reminded at Christmas to express these qualities. So, when your family and friends gather at home or elsewhere, be resolved to express your love, joy, laughter, and happiness. And remember that throughout the world, there are people living without many necessities that we take for granted, such as food, clothing, and shelter. The story about the birth of a baby that the Apostle Luke writes about depicts a baby born in a stable because there was no room in the inn. So be blessed, And Never Give Up! Never Give Up! Never Give Up!
